Timber Windows
Our manufacturing partner for timber windows is George Barnsdale of Spalding Lincolnshire who was established in 1884.
Their windows are verified by the BWF Window Accreditation Scheme.
Although Pvc windows sections are being produced that look like wood there are many situations where
only timber windows will be suitable. This could be that people have environmental issues or that a
building is Listed, is in a conservation area or Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
In balancing good looks of Traditional wooden windows and modern technology to prolong the life and appearance of the windows Amberwood have strict guidelines.
The windows should be glazed from the inside. Why? For security and to reduce joints externally
to avoid water penetration.
The glazing is drained and vented. Why? No window is totally waterproof, accept this and drain accordingly.
All end grain should be sealed prior to assembly. Why? If any water does penetrate joints the window will
not rot from the inside.
Casement windows to be fitted with high security locks with security claws. Why? Maximum Security
The windows should be factory finished with a dipped coat for maximum penetration and two finish spray coats. Why? So that the window looks better for longer, without maintenance.
Sealing Joints
If a joint fails and the end grain is exposed it will draw in water and destroy the window. We are obsessed with avoiding joint failure and sealing the end grain. The joints are bonded with resorcinol formaldehyde
and sealed. Both processes are expensive but essential for long tem durability.
Finishes
If the timber remains dry it will last forever! This is why extensive development has been carried out with
Akzo Nobel, to provide a preservative and painting system that will provide a long term protection with low maintenance.
Ironmongery
The best quality British made ironmongery is used. Cheap Far Eastern ironmongery has poor
performance and will not last.
